5 Minutes with CocoRosie
Bianca Casady on the creative process, being labelled a freak and what expect from their upcoming Australian tour.
You’re often put into the “Freak Folk” basket. How do you feel about this tag?
I think it’s very 2004. It’s awkward to call an artist or a group of artists “freak”. We are supposed to be freaks in a way, showing people things that are hard to look at which exist in all of us, making the monstrous beautiful.
How would you describe your music?
Your music is underscored by a lot of eerie but childlike innocence. What’s led to this sound?
We like to bridge the world of our dream life with our waking life. We like to work from such a lucid space.
How would you describe your song-writing process?
Intuitive, chaotic, patchwork of sorts – like quilting.
You seem to have a very close bond. How does that affect your music?
We don’t have to explain things to each other in words and other regular terms. We understand one another’s vision.
Your nomadic childhood is constantly referenced. Did your upbringing affect your music and the themes that surface?
We don’t relate to “settles life” as we don’t feel like we belong anywhere. This goes for genres of music as well.
Grey Oceans is your fourth album. Have you changed much since putting together your first album (both personally, and musically?)
I suppose we have changed in many ways but we also circle back to some of our original techniques in music making as well as themes and muses.
The film clip for ‘Gallows’ was recently released. What was the inspiration for this clip and its Victorian gothic subtext?
The Bloody Twins is a mythology born out of CocoRosie. It continues to unfold its bloody tales starting with our third album and appearing again as the song ‘Gallows’. The Bloody Twins are both part of CocoRosie as well as its own universe with its own sentiments in music.
What was it like collaborating with Australian filmmaker Emma Freeman?
It was great. We have a completely different approach to filmmaking and this kind of challenge can create fantastic results.
What can we expect when you hit our shores next week?
New costumes, new video, many of the songs off the new record and some wild cards.
