This painting prominently depicts a bellydancer with a snakes head. The dancer stems from exoticisation of Arab females in western views whilst exploring themes of 'otherness' shown with a pirate's map marking for gold or for this instance 'Home'. The work is acrylic on unprimed canvas with metal nail detail.
My work revolves around cross cultural alienation. I don't say this is a positive nor negative light; just drawing from and bringing attention to this subject. Being a first generation Australian with a Arab heritage and Islamic upbringing has allowed me to interpret Australia from mutual angles. Im currently doing my Honours in BFA at UNSW Art & Design and had recently won the Jenny Birt Award.
