Few things slip as fluidly between creepy and sad as an abandoned theme park. They also make for pretty good pictures. An internet homage to abandoned places of amusement, Defunctparks.com, looks like it might now be defunct itself, however the photographs have stood the test of time. Particularly captivating are those of Chippewa Lake Park, which remained open for 100 years before being abandoned in the late 70s and, eventually, reclaimed by nature. Photographer Suzy Poling has done a beautiful job of elevating decay to fine art in her own series, Dead Amusements, though the most unnerving of all are her pictures of forgotten mental hospitals. Whether you’re into photography or just a connoisseur of dereliction, both sites are well worth a look.
