What better way to unearth rad music than by asking people who make it? Sure, the tastes of even mainstream musicians often tend towards the bizarre, but we’re firm believers that for every pig-carcass solo there’s something you’d quite enjoy listening to at the bus stop. We asked Devendra Banhart to tell us what tunes he’s been spinning lately. If you’d prefer to see the man himself, he’ll be touring this month ahead of Splendour in the Grass.
1. CHRIS ISAAK
I’ve been listening to a lot of Chris Isaak’s ‘Wicked Games’ over and over again.
2. THE LOST SOULS
They’re actually from Australia. They’re an incredible garage band.
3. GEORGIE FAME
I’ve been listening to just the first five seconds of Georgie Fame’s ‘Bonnie and Clyde’. Just the way he sings that, “Bonnie and Clyde”. It’s so pretty. Just that bit, then I stop listening to the song.
4. THE MONKS
The Monks are a really great band, they have had a huge influence on me.
5. ANGLES BY THE STROKES
Devendra Banhart is touring Australia throughout July ahead of Splendour in the Grass. Tour dates below:
Wed 27 July, Metro Theatre, Sydney
Fri 29 July, Prince Bandroom, Melbourne
