Where are you based?
ND: He’s in Brooklyn, I’m in New Orleans. It’s really cool. It’s like a whole other world. So we’re based on the road.
MA: In Dumbo in Brooklyn Heights. The average age is 85 and there are walkers everywhere and police in cars eating pizza. It’s old school, super cool. It’s actually been taken over by the Jehovah’s Witnesses; they have a watchtower there. That’s their number one area and they have underground tunnels. It’s a really posh, cool neighbourhood and I got this amazing apartment for cheap. The guy’s Greek, I’m Greek. Greeks love Greeks.
Did you get to meet Pixies at Splendour?
N: No they were missing! Our dressing room was right next to theirs and we kept looking in and they were never there. It would’ve been awesome, I’m a big fan. They’re another Boston band. We met Surfer Blood. They were really cool, nice kids.
MA: I met some people from Jonsi. Mumford and Sons were there. They came last night to our show at The Forum. That was fun, they’re good friends. I saw Patience [of The Grates], she was just hanging out.
Where were you staying?
ND: In Brisbane. All the bands were in the same hotel so that was cool. We saw Two Door Cinema Club, they’re awesome. Nice Irish boys.
You’ve toured with them before haven’t you?
MA: Yeah we did this French tour where we had Florence and the Machine opening up for us. She didn’t like that very much.
ND: [Laughing] I think when they booked us things were a little bit different and then she blew up. She had all this production that we would have to tear down before we went on.
MA: They looked like this big, professional British band and then we’d just go on. Everyone would flip out and dance. It ended up evening out in the end.
ND: They were cool though, the band was really nice.
MA: I guess when you sell that many records in the UK you’re going to have a bit of an ego. She’s sold a lot of records. She’s big here too, right? The band is super nice.
Tell us about the next record.
MA: We’re going to be keeping really mum about the new record. We want to make sure we’re really quiet and give ourselves some time to get in the mental state where we’re ready and happy; not taking ambien then sleeping in the same bed fondling each other [laughing]. The last record was very dark, the next one is going to be very light, very beautiful.
