Chaz Bundick is better known by his stage name Toro y Moi which roughly translated means “Bull and Me”.
The 24-year-old experimental musician lets us in on his stream-of-consciousness project, being really bad at remembering song titles and not wanting to be seen as a “super geek songwriter guy”.
You’ve said that you’ve moved on from chillwave, how would you describe your sound now?
I’d say it sounds psychedelic, poppy, funky.
You’ve put out three EPs and two albums in the past two years, do you have a demanding schedule or are you just naturally prolific?
[laughs] If I had to pick one I’d say I’m naturally prolific. I’d just say I’m constantly making stuff whenever I can. If there’s a break and I’m around my instruments and equipment, I’ll probably make something. But it isn’t necessarily release-worthy.
Your recent EP Freaking Out seems to chronicle a romantic roller coaster in the song titles (‘All Alone’, ‘Freaking Out’, ‘Sweet’, ‘Saturday Love’, ‘I Can Get Love’), was that the aim?
Oh yeah. That was the plan; I just wanted to make some pop songs. A lot of my stuff, the tone is always very personal. That’s not really what I’m all about, I like my stuff to be super personal but I don’t want to be seen as some super geek songwriter guy. I just like eclectic music. I wanted to make something that was a little bit poppier.
How does your Sides of Chaz project differ from your Toro y Moi stuff?
That’s just scribbling, kind of nonsensical, me having fun.
What’s the production process for Sides of Chaz?
I just plug everything into the guitar and amp and plug it straight into the recording machine. Then I just start fiddling around and sometimes something good comes out of it.
But it’s mostly free styling?
Yeah it’s pressing record and seeing what happens.
Are you looking forward to playing Laneway Festival around Australia next year?
Yes, of course. I’m really excited because Washed Out are going to be playing and we’re really, really good friends with those guys. I’m looking forward to hanging out with Washed Out.
What was your impression of Australia when you were here earlier in the year?
It was really welcoming and warming and amazing.
What top 5 songs would you put on a playlist of artists you’re enjoying at the moment?
I am really bad with song titles. Something by Kanye West.
Something on there by J Dilla.
Something by Neon Indian.
Something by Cloud Nothings.
And finally Cut Copy.
Toro y Moi are playing at Laneway Festival.
