Issue 29
Once the pages of issue 29 were written, photographed and laid out, the candles were lit to celebrate YEN's fifth birthday. Over the five years since YEN's inception, we've seeked out the most amazing up-and-coming women, giving them a platform to express themselves on which they couldn't have done otherwise or elsewhere. We've covered stories on undiscovered sub-cultures, human and animal rights; and unveiled new musicians, artists and fashion designers. While we weren't busily putting the magazine to bed, we created an annual art book, titled CURVY, which is a collection of female artists from all over the world. Plus we developed the annual Young Woman of the Year Awards, that is a unique award scheme to support young women across film, design, business, community, fashion, music categories.
But every good party needs a theme so we chose to theme this issue with everything to do with the '90s. We fell crazy in love with so many trends that were huge in the '90s all over again. Our fashion team drew inspiration from hip hop band like TLC, T.V shows like Beverly Hills 90201 and music trends like the Riot Grrrls and the era of Shoegazing bands. we took down 'current affairs' memory lane and focussed on US ex-president, Bill Clinton's time in power, how Aussie activists were more efficacious in the '90s, and a look at the deadly fashion trend that raged through this decade - Heroin Chic.
