Winter Beauty Trends

Make-up expert for Smashbox Cosmetics Robin Flanagan gives us the low down on beauty for the colder months.

What are some trends you’re seeing for Winter 2010?

There are a few that are really inspiring me. For one the 1960s style eyeliner has made a come back with the help of Hollywood films like Tom Ford’s A Single Man. Nude eye with a liquid black liner. We are also seeing smoky eyes using bold rich colours like Navy Blue, Hunters Green and Royal Purple. It’s a great way to spice up a classic look.

Is there a particular focus?

Skin! Skin is always a focus especially now that we are seeing celebrities gracing the covers of major mags au naturel. Beautiful make-up always begins with beautiful skin.

How can we create this look at home?

At Smashbox we teach 6 Steps to the Perfect Canvas so that every woman can achieve flawless skin. The steps are:

1. Photo Finish Primer
2. Foundation (with a Foundation brush)
3. Photo Opt undereye brightener followed by concealer
4. Photo Finish Lid Primer
5. Halo Hydrating Perfecting Powder
6. Brow Tech

Most common make-up mistake?

I am a self-declared brow bully. Women forget how important it is to fill in those brows! A powder applied with a brush will always give you a more natural look than a pencil. You don’t need a lot, I’m not talking Sharpie brows, just enough to get the definition back. I see women with a full face of beautiful makeup and bare, untouched brows – what a waste!

What are your top 3 must-have beauty items?

1. La Mer Serum (Love!)
2. Smashbox’s Photo Finish in “Adjust” to get rid of the appearance of red around my nose and cheeks.
3. Smashbox’s Brow Tech

Do you use any unconventional beauty products?

I travel so much that my skin can get dry so I use a 100% organic honey as a moisturising face mask. On a cleansed face apply a thin layer of the gooey goodness and let sit for 3 to 5 min. Then hop in the shower to rinse. Honey is a natural humectant, which means it attracts moisture from the air to your skin. The result is hydrated soft skin.

Best piece of beauty advice you’ve received?

The best beauty advice I have received is SPF everyday! Not just sunny days or beach days. Skin needs to be protected at all times, especially in Australia! I am loving KIT’s SPF 30. It goes on like a moisturiser and it doesn’t make me break me out.
