Strokes of genius
Posted 11th Nov 2009 by Anne Fullerton

Rebeccah Dent has a boundless imagination, more talent than you can poke a paintbrush at and a heart of gold too. From photography to collage, illustration, assemblage and painting she is lending her skills to a good cause. Her latest exhibition “Fragility” is part of an initiative to raise awareness about the health benefits of art for terminally ill children and adults. Special Guest speaker, Dr. Cynthia Parr will be speaking on opening night (18th of November, 6pm-8pm) about her initiative which aims to implement more art in hospitals.

The work draws from fairytales and fables, totems and animism to create visual poems that are about “ making the ordinary extraordinary, reinventing instead of discarding things. Even the smallest of things can hold profound significance,” says Rebeccah. Fragility will be on show from 18th to 28th November at Global Gallery, 5 Comber Street, Paddington NSW.

Head to

The Bicycle Film Festival, Sydney
Posted 10th Nov 2009 by Deborah-Jane Gillard

11-15 November
The Bicycle Film Festival, Sydney

In 2001, Brendt Barbur, Founder and Director, was compelled to start the Bicycle Film Festival after being hit by a bus while riding his bike in New York City. Instead of being deterred by this experience, it inspired him to create a festival that celebrates the bicycle through music, art, and film. Now in its ninth year the festival is held in 39 cities worldwide. 250,000 people are expected to attend this year.

The Bicycle Film Festival celebrates the bicycle in all forms and styles. If you can name it - Tall Bike Jousting, Track Bikes, BMX, Alleycats, Critical Mass, Bike Polo, Road Cycling, Mountain Biking Recumbents - we've probably either ridden or screened it. What better way to celebrate these lifestyles than through art, film, music and performance?

The Festival brings together all aspects of bicycling to advocate its ability to transport us in various ways. Ultimately the BFF is about having a good time. We have been fortunate enough to include the work of established artists such as Jorgen Leth, Mike Mills, Jonas Mekas, Blonde Redhead, Swoon and Michel Gondry; as well as talented newcomers as part of our programming. Many of the artists who have participated in the Bicycle Film Festival, such as the Neistat Brothers and Lucas Brunelle, are gaining more and more recognition for their work.

Posted 29th Sep 2009 by Deborah-Jane Gillard

Contempo brings you this special event showcasing contemporary art from China with talks and entertainment in the atmosphere of avant-garde Beijing.

Nick Vickers, Curator of Delmar Gallery, will speak on the evolution of contemporary Chinese art from its rebellious beginnings in the 1980’s to its globally white hot status today. Simon Wright, Director of QCA Gallery, will then speak on the rapidly growing profile of a new generation of artists emerging from outside Beijing. View the exhibition SICHUAN HOT! - new paintings by emerging artists from Chongqing City.

Festival of Dangerous Ideas: 3-4 October (Sydney)
Posted 28th Sep 2009 by Deborah-Jane Gillard

This October Long Weekend Sydney Opera House plays host to more than 50 speakers and performers, multiple free events, debates, panel discussions and more.

The Festival's Opening Address is by international journalist Christopher Hitchens, in conversation with Tony Jones on the topic 'Religion Poisons Everything'. Taking an opposing stance on Sunday is Catholic Archbishop Cardinal George Pell, who argues 'Without God We Are Nothing' and Keysar Trad who argues that 'Polygamy and Other Islamic Values are Good for Australia'.

The Festival will almost certainly cause moments of outrage, but they hope will hopefully push the boundaries enough to stimulate, provoke and engage people in wider discussion.  For full details head to http://www.sydneyoperahouse.com/about/program/festival_of_dangerous_ideas.aspx
