Learning is a treasure that will follow its owner everywhere

Highschool is a cruel, cruel place and the most evidence of this can be found when planning your year eleven subjects. After a couple of years spent dangling new worlds and skills in front of you the system snatches them away; reigning in your timetable and forcing you to choose the handful of subjects that will in some way shape the career that you should have damn well already chosen by now. How many of you dropped art exploration and took up photography in Yr11 just because you finally could...and then found that it wasn't as fun as you thought it would be (my hand is raised)? Or were forced to drop a language because you simply couldn't squeeze it in anymore, but these days really wish that you could speak French? I know, stink. Well, in good news, Australasian Adult Learners' Week is here to remind us all that It's never too late to pick up a new skill or expand your knowledge. Held from September one - eight, the week encourages those who somehow missed out the first time to get out of the house and into a brand new education - whether it be from uni or a community college. Remember, the average person changes career several times over their lifetime (meaning what we thought was "it" in Yr11 ain't necessarily going to stick) so this really is an opportunity for everyone.

So, you know how a lot of social networking sites have those applications like "Which Hills character are you?", "What 80's love song are you?" or even "what brand of condom are you???". But, evs right? What every aspirational twenty-something and first home buyer really wants to know is which item of Ikea furniture they are. And now you can with this nifty Ikea name generator! As you can see I am the practical yet stylish Katerinan chair but in other incarnations have been the skaty (I like to pronounce it "scatty") chest of drawers and a sexy Kati Maii queen bed. What are you?

If these walls could talk

Whether you love it or hate it, chances are that if you live in Sydney you would have paid a visit to Oxford Arts Factory at least once since it opened it's doors this time last year. And what a successful year it's been for the cavernous venue; from exhibitions from Ben Frost and Andy Uprock; bands such as The Teenagers, These New Puritans and Lightspeed Champion; fashion week parties and product launches - if it involved alcohol, music and residents of Surry Hills, the OAF was all over it. So, if your reputation is all about good times then you're hardly going to have a quiet birthday are you? This Saturday the Oxford Art Factory will celebrate the big 1 with a mammoth free party featuring performances from Yves Klein Blue, Snob Scrilla, The Jezabels and more, as well as DJ sets from Kato, Sleater Brockman, Dan De Caires and everyone else who's played there (which really is like, everyone). Party starts at 7pm.
A new Olympic sport perhaps?

In olympiad news that's saucier than a snug-fitting lycra, around 100,000 free condoms have apparently been distributed around Beijing's Olympic Village. Hey, there's a lot of hormones (both real and synthetic) floating around the village and that post-race downtime can get lonely. China especially ain't taking any chances after the great condom drought of Sydney 2000; when 20,000 extra adult balloons had to be shipped in after the competing athletes made quick work of their allocated 51 each. Going for gold indeed.

Pillow Fight (Sydney)

Around two-thousand people are set to participate in a massive Sydney Pillow Fight tomorrow at Belmore Park (next to Central Station) from 3pm to 5pm. If you wanna join the Pillow Fight you can (a) just turn up to Belmore Park in time for the friendly bashing or (b) register on Facebook by joining the Kingdom of Hearts Facebook group. The organiser of the pillow fight plans on holding future quirky adventures such as a mobile clubbing event in October and a beach based water fight in December. Photo: SmugMug
