Stereo Total

Last Thursday I went back to school, well not really, I went to see Stereo Total at Sydney uni’s Manning bar – nice campus… UTS had the‘70s orange plastic and concrete design, not so inspiring. Anyway, Stereo Total were fantastic, some of the best live music I have seen in a long time. Based in Berlin the French husband and wife duo, Brezel Göring and Françoise Cactus, travelled to Oz to share their quirky cabaret show. A mixture of punk, rock, disco and electro – very French. Another memorable moment was JD’s (from Le Tigre) dj set. One of the best sets ever, JD filled the dance floor with ladeez in a couple of minutes. So good.

Leave the bloody whales alone

While we rape and pillage this earth for all its worth. You'd think, just maybe, there might be certain things in nature we could leave alone. Whales cruise the seas peacefully and beautifully going about their business. They play their part in maintaining the delicate ecosystems of the underwater world eating planktun and staying right out of our way. YET, for some bloody reason Norway, Greenland (Iceland) and Japan find them so damn fascinating they must kill around 2,500 whales every year for "scientific reasons". Yes a profound quandary how does the human stomach react to whale meat and blubber? mmmmmm. WSPA won a small victory this year at the International Whaling Commission preventing Greenland from increasing their killing quota. In a twist you wouldn't believe – it turns out the whale by-products were being sold commercially. No, really? So killing these innocent creatures isn't all in the name of saving mankind and the future of the planet but for commercial benefit, gastronomic satisfaction and greed. Shocking!
Eurovision Did Good

Good things really do come out of Eurovision… with the help of the Midnight Juggernauts. For years now the mother of all singing competitions has been watered down, countries are no longer required to sing in their native tongue (one year Switzerland employed Celine Dion to compete on their behalf – nice one Alpies). This year, although not singing in Russian, the dapper young Dima Bilan did his country proud (and boy band wannabes everywhere), singing Believe draped in the Russian flag. Another Euro doing it right for his country was France’s Sebastian Tellier, his song Divine, a gorgeous, cheesy '80s pop mix won my heart and obviously the collective heart of the Midnight Juggernauts' trio. Taking the sweetest moments of the tune – remixing and splitting – the boys have created an Oh So dreamy ballad. The final icing on the cake… Tellier drove on stage in a golf buggy, sported a ‘70s pimped-out get up (his back up singers in matching shades and beards) and mixed in some Francais verse.
Get down!

Another Youtube entry I know, but honestly I am not being lazy this video is LOOSE!! Take three of the most influential musicians of our time and put them together on stage for "Telethon '87" gettin' wild. James Brown's teeth shine like headlights, Michael Jackson was still "oh so" beautiful and Prince exhibits his former sexual-self (prior to his Jehovah's Witness induction), half naked and thrusting. Enjoy.
Psycho Killer

David Byrne of Talking Heads fame really had it going on in the 80's. This live performance of Psycho Killer, in all its stripped back glory, is worth the watch. The set design, simplicity of performance and that amazzzing suit, combine to create a memorable rendition of the hit. So much for all the production who ha that goes on these days. Also check out Burning Down the House and Once in a Lifetime live.

Known for her sexually explicit artworks Australian artist Hazel Dooney has teamed up with Legends Rubbers to create a limited edition series of condom tins.

Dooney, who has often faced censorship over her controversial art works including her Sex Tourist installation at Art Melbourne in 2007, regards the collaboration a form of cultural enhancement. " It's a great way to distribute and increase awareness of art to people who may not otherwise be able to afford it or who have yet to become really interested in it."

The co-founder of Legends Rubbers, Daniel Moeschinger, approached Dooney due to the fact, "her women are strong, sexy, and unembarrassed, just like her, and they perfectly express Legend's brand values." www.hazeldooney.com
