Green giving

What are you going to buy your mates for Christmas this year? I've got an idea for you! And it has nothing to do with that amazing jewellery store that wraps their fine jewels in a beautiful green box and bag. It's that other shade of green I'm referring to. Greenpeace have launched an online gift shop just in time for Chrissie. The idea behind it is that you can buy your friends or family a virtual gift that will help stop climate change, halt logging in an ancient forest or even save a whale. Some of the gift donations include: Help fund peaceful direct action training for a Greenpeace activist; One share in a portable sawmill, to empower communities in the Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea to manager their own forests and reject industrial loggers; Help fund our activists who defend whales in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary or Give voice to your wish for a green and peaceful future through the gift of a Greenpeace campaign sign.

The choice is yours!!

It's started to happen again. The new generation of creatives are leaving their studying hubs of the last four years to go on and start their own careers. If you're interested to see what they have on offer, I suggest you get down to at least one exhibition. I'm intrigued by what the UTS students have on offer this year. I'm told the foyer of 'that' building will be totally transformed with models hanging around wearing the next look, industrial design objects showcasing the plans for the future plus the arts from the interior and visual communication designers will be on display. The exhibition runs until Saturday 8 December.

YEN’s Black-hot summer issue hit the stands today. It’s cheeky, cute, smart and more sophisticated than ever before. One of the most talented young actresses graces the cover of YEN this issue, Rose Byrne. The YEN team shot Miss Rose Byrne on the streets of New York City, which has been her home since she started filming the hugely successful American TV show, Damages.

Whether you like to roll around in the sand or just enjoy your holidays with a good book, YEN’s summer playtime list is for you. We rounded up a whole bunch of amazing people to chat to like Beth Ditto of The Gossip, who is touring Australia this December; Julie Delpy, the director of 2 Days in Paris, which will hit cinemas Boxing Day plus the most amazing fashion to wear and books to read. And if that’s not enough we spoke to an amazing bunch of people across the community, design, entertainment, business and fashion industries about what inspires them in life – just in time when we’re all making our new year’s resolutions. Enjoy. xx

Instead of betting on the Melbourne Cup today, why not spend your money on a new outfit and help the homeless at the same time. If you’re in Sydney, head down to The Wayside Chapel Op Shop. It sells some of the best designer gear and you only have to check out these amazing looks, YEN’s fashion director, Imogene Barron put together (using only threads from the op shop for a charity function last week) to realise how great it is. The shop is open from 8:30am to 4:30pm Monday to Friday and Saturday mornings at 29 Hughes Street, Potts Point. A big thanks also goes to Matt Reed for taking these amazing pictures at last week’s Wayside charity night. The Wayside Chapel services 2000 young, elderly, frightened and displaced people each week, so they need all the help they can get. I'll make sure I update you via YEN's website on their next event. So stay tuned. Have a great day!

Dealing with climate change is now a normal every day happening in our lives (or should be, if it isn’t). While YEN often reports on stories related to the environment, I thought we should take it one step further. So every issue I’ll be looking for a bunch of young women to test out ‘eco’ products and services. It’s just another way to come up with suggestions to make it easier for you guys to become more environmentally friendly than you already are. If you wanna join the Eco-girl YEN Test Team give me a holla. Thanks to WWF, who supplied this amazing image.
He's Out of Control

If you're a fan of Joy Division, the seminal English rock band of the late '70s, then you must see Control. It's an amazing but sad tale of their lead singer, Ian Curtis, which looks at his life from high school to his death in 1980. The biopic is entirely in black and white, which is fitting considering his story.  I thoroughly enjoyed it, but came out with mixed emotions, angry for the life he led but with also an enormous sadness. Out 25 Oct.
