Prissy Princess & Proud? Venturing out of your comfort zone for the first time? Want the kind of advice Lonely Planet won't give you? Then Aussie expat to NYC Lauren Resnick has the ticket. After travelling around Europe with a massive 'pack on her back, Resnick decided to publish Princess with a Backpack - the girly guide to taking the travel plunge. Ideal for the first-time traveller who literally has no idea about anything other than living the city pink life (complete with manicures and cocktails), Princess helps you sort out the otherwise seemingly simple mundane tasks, like applying for a passport, as well as the girly essentials, such as packing for style and comfort, choosing the right make-up, shopping in the right places and finding femme-friendly hostels to crash. Whilst it is not as comforting to travellers as the humble, fine-print, black-and-white Lonely Planet (one thing it lacks is detail!), it does have a great idea behind it. What it lacks in substance it makes up for in style - which makes it a good buy for the girl dreaming about flying away. Why? It offers some inpiration, loads of girly advice and looks damn pretty on the coffee table.

Inspired by the sophistication of New York and LA venues, and the tapas of the Mediterranean, Springfield’s Restaurant & Bar has brought ‘no rules dining’ to King Cross. Distinguishing itself from other Sydney establishments because of its mixed space – according to Licensee Erica Goldfinch “everything in Sydney is either a bar, a restaurant or a club" – Springfield’s wanted to create the spot where guests “don’t have to eat in a certain section and drink in another area”. They don’t have to stick to the Mediterranean menu either - there’s also a selection of hearty mains, food is served until the wee hours and wait staff wander around in Mavi Jeans and Converse trainers. Well, if the Sydney scene is in need of a breath of fresh air, who are we to challenge the rule-breaking glamour cities of the US of A…
