Do your part to end poverty

The amount of ink spilt over the current slump in the economy may have many of us   crying "bread line" but in reality, having to cut back on a few luxuries is nothing compared to the poverty faced by millions around the world. A group of 300 university students from around Australia, NZ, the Pacific Islands and Papua New Guinea are this month coming together to illustrate this point and push for Australia to play a bigger part in eradicating extreme poverty. The Intervarsity Summit On Australia's Role in Ending Extreme Poverty (ISAREEP' 08) coincides with National Anti- Poverty Week and encompasses a number of events, talks and debates. One of the highlights of the summit is the Big Night Out; held on Saturday, October 11 at Sydney's UTS, this party-with-a-cause is hosted by The Chaser's Chris Taylor and will feature yummy food and drink, good conversation, entertainment, an auction and raffles. Tickets for the event are $140 or $120 for students, with all proceeds going to the 40K Home Foundation to assist in completing their mammoth housing project in Bangalore, India. To purchase tickets or foind out more about ISAREEP, head to the website.

I would like to thank everyone who participated in the Art Exposing Eating Disorders exhibition at the Mori Gallery in July/August this year. I am pleased to report that the final figures are in and the exhibition raised twelve hundred dollars for the Butterfly Foundation National Research Fund. There was some amazing talent and beautiful honest expressions on those walls and any that were not sold have been donated to the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in NSW. Keep your eyes peeled for news of next year’s Art Exposing Eating disorders event because it’s going to be bigger and better! Start getting your artistic ideas together now. Looking forward to it and thanks again to everyone who supported it.

Cohen et SUBLIME.

It’s time once again to throw off the metaphorical shackles of winter; the dapper fitted trench, thick patterned stockings and token neck scarf (but since every myspace-savvy teen and his dog are wearing those now, I’ll bet your glad to lay that one to rest) and embrace the uninhibited freedoms of spring attire. Following a throng of flourishing designer partnerships, Sportsgirl, Australia’s own little Topshop, are now set to bring the charm of Cohen et Sabine to their stores for us lucky ladies to lap up. The luxury collection, inspired by the 1972 Goldie Hawn flick, Butterflies are Free, is all whimsical crotchet, cotton lace and sequins, a delightful mish-mash of sharp 60’s modernity and yeah, you guessed it, ‘vintage’ glamour. But no matter how generic the delineative, these designer pieces are so hot they could melt faster than a Bubble-o-Bill in a solarium. Expect cascading maxi dresses in bold prints, short shift skirts and flowing silhouettes (oh mannnn, count me in).

The limited edition garments range from $170 - $350 and are hitting Sportsgirl stores this October.

Yesterday i took, Milou (my dog) to a doggy day spa. She wasn't impressed until the bacon treats came out! Mud pack treatment, full body trim, blow dry and yes even a massage with Reiki-Healing. If you love your little poochie friend take them down to see Michiyo at Maru-Maru.

When we were young, we used to play dress ups in our mums and grandmothers wardrobes, we donned the clothes that defined the defining moments of their lives and we felt like someone. There is something amazing about clothing with a story behind it and that is where vintage becomes an art of expression. When you trawl the vintage shops and combine the amazing pieces you are transporting yourself to another time through style that is timeless. We all know that fashion goes round in circles right now designers are loving the feather classics of the 1930’s and reviving the decadence of 17th century brocade so it seems logical that the best places to find the one off runway pieces is not the glossy boutiques but in the vintage shop that looks like your grandmas wardrobe. The best thing about these garments is that they are open to reinterpretation, just like the make do and mend times of post world war two an incredible outfit can be created from the bits and pieces that was another person’s wardrobe clean out, wedding gowns can become stylish cocktails dresses embellished with bits of 1930’s lingerie and cardigans can become stylish patchwork knit dresses. So next time you want to stand out research your favourite designer then hit the vintage shops and make the classic designer look you loved classically you. To achieve stunningly different results you must have a stunningly different approach.

Visit these great vintage haunts in your spare time and take a journey in style.
