Ahh, Albert.

I have no doubt that you're still a little bitter if your expeditious mouse-clicking abilities failed to secure you a highly coveted ticket to this years Splendour In the Grass festival. I make such an assumption because I too am still a little bitter. Luckily for those of us in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, the chance to catch a piece of the festivities is as easy as heading to Albert Hammond Jr's pre-Splendour concert. Along with Matt Romano, Mark Philippe Eskenazi and Josh Lattanzi, the scruffy Strokes guitarist-turned-solo-artist promises to deliver a night of 70's inspired, bluesy revelry. Not quite the entire Byron Bay lineup - but definately one of its best. Check out his website for ticket details.

Ahoy there folk fans!

To most, a quick sojourn in a sleepy Californian coastal town would pretty much be synonymous with utopia. That is, until the monotony of fishing, fishing and uh, fishing set in. The debut album of folk-pop collective Port O'Brien, All We Could Do Was Sing, echoes the frustration of sea-weary fellows, constricted by the confines of their small-town surrounds. Emerging in early 2005, the band quickly developed a distinctive sound; flowing melodies supplemented by mandolin, harp and banjo, accoustic torrents building to mass choruses and pensive, melancholy lyrics interpolated with notably nautical connotations. Songs like I Woke Up Today embrace an epic, Arcade Fire style energy in all their illustrious glory. Having supported the likes of Modest Mouse, Rogue Wave, The Cave Singers and Bright Eyes, this is definately one little seaside band destined for bigger things.

Oh come on. Surely there aren't really such deprived people at large in the world? Seriously, humanity's lack of depth sometimes just levels me.  To catch you up to speed, the BBC has recently reported that the gravestone marking the grave of Ian Curtis, the late frontman for the legendary Joy Division, has been stolen. According to the Beebs, at some point between Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning, thieves removed the stone from the Macclesfield Cemetery in Curtis' hometown of Macclesfield, England. Authorities currently have no leads.

You should go to this because:
A) Yves Klein Blue are a most excellent band.
B) Spruce Lee is a most excellent DJ.
C) Doris, the owner of The Hollywood, is totally crazy and last week kicked the band off stage which means you're guaranteed to get some entertainment from your night one way or another.
D) Pretty much nothing is $5 these days.
Zooey Deschanel plays in the woods, looks cute

While, truth be told, not a design revolutionary, New York designer Erin Fetherston does have a knack for making very pretty, whimsical clothes and marketing them in very pretty, whimsical ways. Back in 2006 she teamed up with film-maker Ellen Von Unwerth to create "Dollybird', a short film that showed Kirsten Dunst cavorting in the park and playing dress-ups with Fetherston's wears. For her autumn/winter 2008 collection Fetherston has once again teamed up with Von Unwerth; this time employing the perenially saucer-eyed and oh-so-cute zooey Deschanel to cavort through the park in her clothes. Really though, "Dreamy Wander" is very cool. check it out above.

Donkey
; the new album from Sao Paulo kids, CSS, is due out very soon and if the first single, Rat is Dead is anything to go by, it would seem that their sophomore effort marks a more grownup turn for the party-hard group of misfits who were asking us to make love to death from above in 2006. I'm not sure if this song is about actually vermin or what but I do know the video is a mad hair metal/cock-rock throwback complete with empty dilapidated warehouse, light shows, headbands and Lovefoxx in a white, fur-trimmed jumpsuit. Nice.

Come one come all! Come and play a Japanese flute bigger than your body. If you're under 1.8 metres, that is. The World Shakuhachi Festival 2008 starts tomorrow and will be the largest congregation of shakuhachi players ever. The festival ends Tuesday July 8 so you’ve got plenty of time to channel your musical talents and embrace the oriental at a range of venues across Sydney. And don’t be scared, there’s an absolute beginners workshop for those who have never seen or heard of the bamboo flute, and more advanced classes for Shakuhachi masters (I salute you!) More details at the website.
