Every Sunday, London-based designer Rosie Bonnar stands next to a small stall of pleasingly tailored threads at East London’s ever-fresh Brick Lane markets. Bill†Mar, Bonnar’s newly launched label, has only been up and running for five weeks but it’s already gathering a loyal following amongst the young-uns for its use of wearable, high quality fabrics. Yen caught up with the delicious young primrose to chat – sadly not over a cuppa, but not everything can be achingly English, can it?
What is the essence of the Bill†Mar girl?
There’s a bit of ‘70s hippie, and a bit of ‘80s punk. Her personality makes her stand out and she likes to take risks but doesn’t try too hard. Bill†Mar is about using simple silhouettes - creating detail and texture through contrasting fabrics and prints. The simple shapes, good quality fabrics and reasonable prices mean it can be worn by many and can be dressed up or dressed down.
How did you get the label up and running?
I set up Bill†Mar this year after graduating from university. I studied fashion design for four years, which included a year in industry in Sydney where I worked for a brilliant women’s wear designer. Being inspired by the designer I had worked for the year before, I decided to take the plunge and set up my own label.
Tell us about your time in Australia and it’s influence on your designs.
My year in Australia has been the most inspiring of my life so far. I learnt how to mix fashion with art and culture, such as in the surf and skate scene that is so dominant in Sydney. Most of all I was inspired by the positive attitude of the people that surrounded me. I was so taken aback by how many young and creative people there were, all having fun, taking risks and doing what they loved. This is what gave me the confidence to start Bill†Mar.
What is your favourite thing about Sydney summer fashion?
Sexy bikinis, bright colours (something not seen a lot in London) and all the wonderful tattoos that come out on show!
The Bill†Mar range is available to view and order via facebook or email.
