The Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI) is once again taking part in Melbourne Spring Fashion Week with Fashion Icons on Film - a season of documentaries that celebrate fashion through four pioneering designers. The first film, Ultrasuede: In Search of Halston, traces the rise and tragic fall of Roy Halston, the man who coined the phrse “you’re only as good as the people you dress”. Fittingly, the documentary includes interviews with close friends such as Liza Minelli, Anjelica Huston and Diane Von Furstenberg. Alternatively you can head into London’s Swinging Sixties in Beyond Biba: A Portrait of Barbara Hulanki, take a look behind the scenes on the eve of a couture launch in Ralph Rucci: A Designer and His House or experience the twilight years of the legendary Yves Saint Laurent in the controversial final documentary made about the designer. Oliver Meyrou’s portrait of a fragile tortured artist, Célébration, was considered so biting it was banned in France.
Fashion Icons on Film will run from 28 August – 4 September, 2010. Head to ACMI for the full schedule.
