How To Hit Up A Festival, Tkay Maidza-Style
If a few new additions made it into your festival wristband collection over the holidays, chances are you caught a glimpse of rising Aussie rapper and current Yen cover gal Tkay Maidza owning the main stage like a total boss. We sat down for a quick ten with the ‘Tennies’ star to find out how she handles life on the festival circuit (hint: like all great things, it involves pizza).
Which act did you enjoy the most at Falls Festival?
Childish Gambino, he is basically a hero to me.
What items are a must-have on your rider?
I just really like fruit – it keeps you hydrated and is also a healthy sugar rush. Or you can just have Starburst for the pure sugar rush.
What do you most look forward to doing on your days off?
Just falling back into some sort of routine where I sleep at a good time and catch up on normal life stuff.
What has been your favourite festival experience as a punter?
I think Pukkelpop in Belgium was my favourite, I saw Rihanna and Die Antwoord at the same venue!
Which song of yours always gets the crowd going the hardest?
How do you normally hype yourself up for a festival show?
I am usually very quiet and I mentally go over any songs that I think don’t remember.
What’s your go-to festival food?
Pizza, it’s so great. Or burgers, chicken wings… mainly “small” bites.
What makes your Australian fans different from the crowds you get everywhere else?
They’re really familiar with me so it feels like a group of friends celebrating rather than a show.
What is the best way to beat the heat at a summer festival?
Drink a lot of water and stay out of the sun.
What’s the best thing about festivals that you just can’t get from a theatre show?
You have a bigger lineup and there’s so much space to run amok – it’s usually such a great experience.
