If there’s one electronic duo making a splash on the scene lately it’s the endearing brothers with the wild hair from Sydney’s Inner West, Cosmo and Patrick Liney, who together make up Cosmo’s Midnight. Not just brothers, these two are identical twins, so sometimes you can’t tell who is spinning the decks on the left and who is spinning on the right, but that doesn’t really matter because, like most of the population, we know squat about the art of DJing, other than knowing we want it cranked up to 11 and we want it right now.
Cosmo’s Midnight first made our little ear hairs dance with their remix of Lykke Li’s ‘Little Bit‘. We’ve since heard them kick ass on the radio, seen them destroying airwaves at Outside In festival and even one time saw them outside a convenience store in Newtown.
We have high hopes for the future of Cosmo’s Midnight so we pin Cosmo down for a quick chat before the pair get Mariah Carey famous and we can’t hear them over the sound of chihuahuas barking.
First things first: being twins, do you have telepathic abilities?
I’m not to sure how different it is to having a brother, obviously we are very close having grown up together and having the same mates and stuff. Sadly we have no telepathic abilities.
Were either of you named after anyone?
I (Cosmo) get this asked allll the time, usually if I’ve been named after Kramer or the Fairy from that kid’s show. But I think my parents named me after a Greek architect called Cosmo.
What made you remix Lykke Li’s ‘Little Bit’ and release it as your first track?
That was such a spontaneous, random decision. I guess we were just listening to her at the time and it is our favourite song by her.
If you could collaborate with anyone right now who would it be?
AlunaGeorge, and we say this in every interview (laughs).
Who’s the most down-to-earth person in the Aussie music industry?
Wave Racer, he’s got really good morals and is super humble.
If you could play at one festival, which would you choose?
Coachella for sure.
It’s the last day on earth and you get to eat one last thing, do you choose pizza or a burger?
Pizza, but a super ritzy one, nothing cheap.
If you weren’t making music what would you be doing?
Playing Dota 2 at a pro level maybe.
How did you celebrate the release of your EP, Surge?
I think we got some ciders and had a quiet drink at home.
What’s did you each buy with your first Cosmo’s Midnight paycheck?
Some new games, monitors for mastering, heaps of food and a little bit of clothing.
Of anyone in the world, which artist would you want to remix you?
Oh wow so many options… um maybe right now we’d like a remix from Lindsay Lowend.
Favourite TV show?
The Simpsons, hands down.
What is next for the two of you?
Working on new material as always, touring overseas and having more shows around Australia.
Cosmo’s Midnight are playing Field Day, check out the lineup and get your tickets here.
