Dangling the carrot
Posted 5th May 2008 by Katie May Ruscoe
If you read YEN you no doubt belong to a certain generation and are also no doubt sick and tired of a certain stereotype that’s being increasingly attached to it. While recruitment agencies may refer to Generation Y as "Top dollar, no experience, wants your job in 12 months" my argument is that sometimes we just may damn well deserve it - because the fact is that we are an ingenuitive bunch and currently the most concerned and pro-active campaigners against the environmental and social strife that’s come about thanks to the mistakes of previous generations. This video serves as proof of this statement. Carrotmob are a San Fran based collective of young people who created an experiment which uses capitalist practices to encourage environmental change. The group gave local convenience stores the option to “bid” on what percentage of their sales they would give to make their business more environmentally friendly; the winning business would then be promoted amongst local consumers as THE best store for environmentally conscious locals to shop. Both the idea and the results are quite genius – check it out and be inspired to start something like Carrotmob in your community!
