Hot off the press

The Big Fag Press is a collectively owned, ethically operated, non-profit community printing press – the only one of it’s kind in Sydney. This Thursday, May 8 the collective is launching a “special edition, collectable, snazzy, BIG FAG PRESS BROCHURE” which, to show what the monster press is made of, will come as a massive A1 poster. The launch will be by MCA curator Glenn Barkely; who will also be introducing the Big Fag Press’s latest acquisition, The Riso Machine (i.e a digital printer). Proceeding kick of from 6pm at the Sydney Collective Gallery, 302 Cleveland St, Redfern.
Dangling the carrot
If you read YEN you no doubt belong to a certain generation and are also no doubt sick and tired of a certain stereotype that’s being increasingly attached to it. While recruitment agencies may refer to Generation Y as "Top dollar, no experience, wants your job in 12 months" my argument is that sometimes we just may damn well deserve it - because the fact is that we are an ingenuitive bunch and currently the most concerned and pro-active campaigners against the environmental and social strife that’s come about thanks to the mistakes of previous generations. This video serves as proof of this statement. Carrotmob are a San Fran based collective of young people who created an experiment which uses capitalist practices to encourage environmental change. The group gave local convenience stores the option to “bid” on what percentage of their sales they would give to make their business more environmentally friendly; the winning business would then be promoted amongst local consumers as THE best store for environmentally conscious locals to shop. Both the idea and the results are quite genius – check it out and be inspired to start something like Carrotmob in your community!
Something tasty for your Saturday
You know that feeling you get when you forget that something really good is about to go down (like an old friend is coming to visit or your imminent birthday that you know your friends are planning a surprise party for) and then you remember? That's what I feel like everytime I remeber that Crystal Castles exist. I simply love them that much. There's not much I can say about this video aside from the fact that it's for Courtship Dating; the latest single from the Toronto duo which is as addictive and yummy and layered as a piece of backlava.
For art's sake?
Yes, we've all inwardly cringed upon sighting 'artistic' photos of our friends' pre-pubescent younger sister dressed a little too scantily. So is it any different when the images are taken by renowned fashion photographer Annie Leibovitz and feature 15 year-old Disney sensation Miley Cyrus? The photos, leaked on the internet and now featured in the current issue of
Vanity Fair, have been heavily criticized by the international media, leaving Disney questioning Miley's long term future as a role model to young girls. They do have a point. It's probably a little hard to push the I-love-flared-jeans-and-glitter-hair-clips stereotype if your teenage protege is simultaneously working the I'm-arty-in-nothing-but-a-bed-sheet look.
So is it classic, natural beauty or inappropriate sexualisation? That's what we're all trying to figure out.
Cheap thrills

It's damn hard to keep culturally up-to-date when everything seems to cost so much these days - especially when there are more petrol saving dockets in your coin purse than actual coins. This is why, like any self respecting girl on a limited budget, you should take advantage of the free Moran Portrait Prize Exhibition. Located at the NSW State Library this weekend from 11-5 pm, the exhibition includes a diverse display of both up and coming and well established Australian artists. Get there quick ‘cos it finishes up this Sunday.
And yes, it's worth you forking out a couple of precious bucks for the train ticket.
Our lady (and man) of the flowers
At least the new subversive craze to hit Europe smells better than aerosol and looks nicer than a sloppy, illegible tag. On the back of 'guerilla knitting' and 'urban exploring' comes guerilla gardening; a practice that see's flora lovers take to the streets by torchlight and plant lavender and French daisies where a grey urban wasteland once lay. The video above is a story the BBC recently did on the movement. Wonder if it will catch on here? I can certainly think of some city pockets that need a bit of flash-beautifying!
Hoop, there it is
After a wee hiatus (during which time it's organisers kept themselves busy spinning for everything from the ARIA awards to the recent Incu store opening), your favourite all-girl party night; Hoops, is bringing the shake and pop back on May 16. Joining the original pussy posse in this all-night revelry is Pip and Aimee (of Georgio Armani's favourite party-starters, Chicks on Decks), Casio, Annalise Brakensiek (huh??), The Innappropriates, DJ Crane plus a live performance from MC Gaff E. Don't know who these people are? Head down to Club 77 from 10pm and you soon will. Don't know what Hoops play? Click here for a degustation of music so exclusive and tasty that they're thinking of putting it on the menu at Tetsuyas. Yowwww!
