Robin Clare’s ‘Dancing Words’ at Blacklisted
We are super proud to announce that Robin Clare, one of our 20 finalists in this year’s Yen Art Awards, is showing off her ‘Dancing Words’ series in a solo exhibition at Blacklisted Gallery’s Black Penny in Surry Hills. Depicting the latest Jamaican dance crazes and the rise of the dancehall, these bold paintings will give you some hard-to-beat moves for your next dance off.
My name is: Robin Clare. I am a mad fan of: Most things dance related. I can’t wait to go back to: It’s hard to choose! Somewhere on a perfect sunny Sydney day, which it is today. Ask again when it’s raining and my answer will most likely be Doctors Cave Beach in Jamaica. This series was inspired by: Dancehall culture, specifically the creativity and momentum of the dance scene that’s grown out of the genre. My next project is: Working on a series of illustrations for a dancehall choreographer, Latonia Style, who is putting a how-to book together. Some words I’ll never forget are: “Likkle but talawa” – it’s a Jamaican saying meaning small but strong.
When: Opening night July 9 2013 at 6pm. Exhibition runs from July 9 – July 15, 2013.
Where: Blacklisted at Black Penny, 648 Bourke Street, Surry Hills, NSW 2010
Hours: Tue – Sat: 12pm – 12am. Sun: 12pm – 11pm.
Extra Incentive: Appleton Estate Caribbean Cocktail on arrival + Dancehall, Dub and Reggae by DJ Louis Basselines.
