Sophie Thatcher’s Jewellery
A pair of pink earrings started it all. Brisbane jeweller Sophie Thatcher reminisces, “As silly as it sounds, the first piece of jewellery I was obsessed with were my Barbie clip on pink ‘diamond’ earrings. I think I’ve had an earring fetish ever since!” While the days of pink plastic may be behind her, Thatcher’s interest in jewellery remained and she found she had lots of ideas for pieces but just didn’t have the know-how to make them. A silversmithing course provided all her answers and cemented her desire to start her own label and make her own range. While she juggles studying at university, Thatcher has produced her first range. All unique and handcrafted in her home studio, her range is “simple, contemporary and minimal”.
How long have you been making jewellery for?
My ideas have been brewing for a long time but I only launched my label in the last 12 months. At the moment I’m balancing making jewellery with studying a business/law degree which can be challenging particularly around exam time!
Did you study?
Although I had ideas about pieces that I wanted to create, I knew I needed to learn the craft of silversmithing before I could bring them to life. I completed a course at a studio here in Brisbane which really helped me grasp the basic skills I needed, but I think silversmithing is one of those things where you learn new skills all the time through experimenting and creating new things.
When did you know you wanted to be a jeweller?
When I made my first ring in my first class – I was completely hooked from then.
What’s your favourite part of the process?
I love the early stages of experimenting with ideas, but I get the most satisfaction from finally bringing my ideas to life. Holding a finished piece is such a great feeling.
What’s one surprising thing that people wouldn’t know about jewellery making?
It may be surprising to some people that a simple piece can take many hours to produce – it’s not as easy as it looks!
Who would you love to see wearing one of your pieces?
Bella Hadid! I love her effortless style. I even named a couple of pieces after her (the Bella earrings and the Bella bangle).
When do you do your best work?
I probably do my best work early in the morning with a cup of coffee and listening to some good music.
Do you have your own studio?
I’m really lucky to have a spare room in my house that overlooks the garden that I use as my studio. It’s so peaceful and is the perfect place to be creative and come up with new ideas.
What are you working on at the moment?
I’m experimenting with new shapes and textures for my new collection, which will be very different to Forme. Watch this space!
