Video Premiere ✧ Holly Throsby – ‘What Do You Say?’
Sydney singer-songwriter Holly Throsby is one of those marvellously talented creatures who’s a testament to the idea that a lot of life can be lived in five years. In the time since her 2011 critically acclaimed album, Team, she’s rejoined Sally Seltmann and Sarah Blasko for another Seeker Love Keeper record, penned her first novel, Goodwood, a “big-hearted and emotionally bruising story” that’s currently sitting at #3 on Dymocks’ Best Books of 2016 list, and come bearing the news that her fifth solo album will be with us in 2017. In case you hadn’t already guessed, Holly Throsby is one gifted human being.
Throsby devoted her time between albums to gathering and collecting ideas, honing her songwriting skills for what would become her new record After a Time, set to be released February 17, 2017. “Some of these [songs] were written around writing my first novel, Goodwood, and some readers may find that imagery from the book has made its way onto this record,” Throsby says of her new album. “There are mountains and rivers and towns and a general reflection on our relationship with our physical environment; as well as notions of restlessness, contentment, personal responsibility, longing, regret and reconciliation.”
The good news keeps coming: Throsby has just unveiled the new film clip for her single ‘What Do You Say?’, a beautiful collaboration with Sun Kil Moon’s Mark Kozelek who “gave the gift of his voice to the album’s central duet”. Shifting away from her traditional folk framework, Throsby has made like Bob Dylan and gone electric, with her sound’s layered textures veering from “clear and close to fuzzy and washed out”.
In honour of her immersive new record, Throsby is hitting the road in March for her first headline tour in six years, starting at the Clarendon Guesthouse in Katoomba before weaving across the country and landing at Babushka in Perth. Needless to say, these shows are ones not to be missed.
